What to expect during your LASIK or PRK consultation

Your eyes will be thoroughly examined and a number of specialized tests will be performed to see if you are suitable for PRK or LASIK. It’s best if you come in wearing your glasses or contacts. A comprehensive health eye exam always has to be performed to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and other conditions. The doctor will also discuss possible complications and risks with you. Once you decide that you are ready to get LASIK or PRK, your procedure will be scheduled and you will be advised of when you should stop wearing contacts.

LASIK vs PRK

LASIK & PRK are types of refractive eye surgery that treat vision problems like farsightedness, astigmatism, and nearsightedness. Both PRK and LASIK use a laser to reshape the cornea to help you see clearly. However, these procedures do it in slightly different ways.

PRK removes the outer layer of the cornea, which grows back over time, while LASIK creates a thin flap in the cornea. Both LASIK and PRK have pros and cons, therefore, your eye doctor will help you determine which procedure is right for you.

If you’re active, you might prefer LASIK because you’ll have clear vision faster. However, PRK may be a better choice for people with dry eyes or thin corneas.

What are the side effects?

PRK: For a few days your eyes will feel scratchy or sore and you might notice halos around lights at night. These problems won’t last long and your eye doctor will tell you how to manage them.

Serious side effects, like cloudiness, scarring, infections, or vision loss are extremely rare.

LASIK: For a few days after the procedure your eyes may burn or itch and your vision might be blurry. Other, less common, side effects include: light sensitivity, halos around lights at night, red patches in your eye. 

Just like with PRK, other more serious side effects are extremely rare.
